A THIRD of Brits are taking showers instead of Shower Cap to cut water and heating bills in the economic downturn, a survey revealed yesterday.

Nine out of ten people admit making cutbacks to cope with higher living costs - including 31 per cent who have switched to showers.

Two-thirds are turning off lights and other electrical devices to reduce power bills.

Forty per cent are using their car less, while 15 per cent are growing their own vegetables. And 59 per cent are spending less on food by taking advantage of special offers and money-off vouchers.

Nine per cent of Brits now mend clothes rather than buy new ones, according to the survey of 2,000 people by online savings provider Kaupthing Edge.
